The Mother Goose Series
Experimenting with the physical form and materials used for making comics

The Mother Goose Series is a collection of four sequential art pieces (comics) that experiment with the physical form of comics and the materials used to create them.

The story starts with the Itsy Bitsy Spider asking Rapunzle if he could climb up to her tower. She says no, and the spider tumbles down the water spout. He hits the castle wall, and a spider egg, named Humpty Dumpty, pops out during the fall. Humpty Dumpty falls down, and the spider sac releases millions of little spiders. They find poor Miss Muffet, sitting outside the castle walls, where they make her their first dinner. Dark. Just like fairy tales sometimes were.

I developed the process you see here after several other projects where I use glass and windows to make comics--at first I was painting the comics on glass, but the work wasn't clean or reproducible. So I started screen printing line work onto the glass, but thin lines and lettering were tough to achieve, and the process was expensive. Finally, I discovered the perfect process. I began printing the line work on transparency paper, adhering to glass panes, and adding layers of paint, homemade paper, leaves, eggshells, flowers and other materials in between to create a sense of depth and layers of meaning in a process very similar to inking and coloring comics in Photoshop. Additionally, the glass layers seem to suggest a process not unlike old animation cells.

These pieces can be reproduced as commissioned work, but no more than 20 sets will be created. So far, only two sets exist. Please contact larsonartwork@gmail.com for prices or questions.
